Backcountry

Back country skiing is skiing in the backcountry where there are no snow cats to groom the snow, no ski patrol to bring you down when you get hurt, no ski resort. Just you, mountain, and the deep powder. Most backcountry skiers take either a helecopter up or a snowmobile to get to the top of the mountain. In the US most backcountry skiing takes place in mountains out west and in alaska. When going backcountry skiing, you will need a different pair of skis. Most backcountry skis are a lot thicker than regular skis because the larger surface area helps glide on top of the loose powdery snow. It is also advised to bring an avalanche beacon with you incase an avalanche burries you. An avalanche Beacon allows rescue people to locate you under the snow.
